Hey guys! Welcome to our developer journal. This time we want to share with you the process behind one of our very early and important enemies: Goblins! We have put a lot of effort into the overall design and details of goblins and we will share everything about goblins in detail in this article. It’s time to see what you know about these enemies from the game!
Inspiration
Fonzie Liu(DEV): “When choosing enemy types early on, we really thought about a lot of them. For example: humans, robots, vampires, orcs, elves, ninjas, bats and more, but we realized that there seemed to be no particularly good goblin and skeleton characters in the VR industry, We are also very keen on the world of fantasy adventures, so goblins and skeletons became our choice of early enemy types.”
In the game, the characters and the environment bring different experiences to the players. When we consider that enemies will also bring different emotions to players, we want to make Goblins a character that brings joy and challenge to players. So sometimes you will see some goblins taunting you before attacking.
Fledgling Stage
Since we decided this would be a "funny, wacky, and even troublesome" enemy type, we wanted him to be cute in size as well. We decided to let him have fierce fangs and a bulging belly at the same time.
In order to prevent more things from interfering with the player's sight, we have also removed a lot of clothes and accessories. In the initial design, you can see that our facial expressions are actually made more ferocious and fierce. So after we made many facial adjustments, we finally achieved the effect we wanted.
Gameplay Design
Fonzie Liu(DEV):“Goblins are an ethnic group that live and fight in caves for their entire life. We hope to create a more realistic feeling to players, so that players feel like they are facing a goblin's lair.”
So as an ethnic group, of course there will be goblins of different shapes and sizes! Based on this, we have designed a lot of different gameplay. You can see goblins who throw bombs, and those who are familiar with melee combat. You'll also see goblins who can cast spells, while some goblins are as agile as wild beasts. No matter what tier Goblins are, they will jump and move around frequently, and different tiered goblins will have different positions and movesets.
Fonzie Liu(DEV):”Based on the deeper difficulty curve of the game itself, it is also a very good choice to enrich the goblins group.”
Besides gameplay, you will also notice that we have goblins with different skin colors and different clothes. This is also to enrich the diversity of character and match with our design ideas. For example, goblins without armor are more likely to be injured than goblins with armor, and goblins with helmet protection also increase the difficulty for players to hit with their attacks.
Sound Design
Fonzie Liu(DEV):“Goblins of different tiers will have different personalities, just like us! Children are more naughty, while teenagers have more personality and will not admit defeat. So the sound design covers different age groups.”
The little goblin is like a child, haunting you and being mischievous. In terms of dubbing, we want to bring joy to the players, so the overall look will be more funny.
Medium goblins are like teenagers, they have nothing to fear in the world. Some are like punks, they speak the sharpest words, but they are always beaten by players in the end.
The goblin boss is like a more ferocious big brother, who will only attack you all the time and try to take you down. They don't really like to talk.
Special Physical Design
All enemies in our game have about 3-4 sets of expression combinations. The biggest difference between Goblins and other enemy characters and the most distinctive place are their ears. Goblins are the only characters in our game that have ear physics.
A lot of players have already noticed this, our goblin ears are like jelly. But why do only goblins have ear physics?
Fonzie Liu(DEV): “😜”
Future
Fonzie Liu(DEV):"In the future we will also try Orcs or Siege Behemoths that can be climbed.”
Our game will also add more interesting enemy types and other content in future updates. You are welcome to join our discord community to share your ideas and suggestions.
